Empowering the Workforce: Lessons in Skill Development from India’s Prime Minister

During this morning’s post-budget webinar on “Harnessing Youth Power – Skilling and Education”, India’s Prime Minister Mr. Modi addressed the audience and highlighted that this budget focuses on building a practical and industry-oriented education system. He recognized that the education sector has been rigid and emphasized his government’s efforts to reorient education and scaling to align with the aptitude of the youth and the demands of the future.

The Prime Minister noted that new technology is helping to build modern classrooms, and with the aid of technology, teachers can extend their role beyond the classroom to utilize the vast resources available worldwide. He highlighted that several digital and technological initiatives are ongoing in India to strengthen universities and transform knowledge, skills, and research and development.

Mr. Modi emphasized the central government’s focus on internships and apprenticeships to provide youth with exposure outside the classroom, and he called for the expansion of the internship culture. He stated that apprenticeships will help students become future-ready, and his government is encouraging them through stipends and creating a conducive environment for industries to recognize the best-skilled workforce.

The Prime Minister informed the audience that the government has taken forward its previous focus on skilling in this budget, with provisions made for stipends for 50 lakh youth from the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme. He also announced that Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 will skill, re-skill, and upskill lakhs of youth, including Divyangjan, tribals, and women, through tailor-made programs. Furthermore, PM Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana will empower traditional industries like handicrafts to manufacture and access new markets.

Mr. Modi concluded his remarks by stating that the world views India as a manufacturing hub, and skilled workers are essential in attracting investments.
